I create abstract paintings with thin layers of paint. Through slow perceptual encounters of colour and light, I think of each painting as a poetic exchange that occurs in person. The encounter can take place on a wood panel the scale of my head or on a canvas wider and taller than my body, extending beyond the reach of my outstretched arms into mists of space. My paintings could spill onto the floor and become sculpture or walk back up the wall as a photograph. It is movement that motivates my practice.

About

Sarah Rooney’s visual research combines subtle relationships between the visible and the invisible through painting, photography and installation. Her work traces the boundary where representation harnesses abstract networks, touching the terrain of landscape and precarious ecosystems. Working at the intersection of different geographical contexts, she is currently creating trajectories of encounters with fragments of images and objects - soft interruptions that began on the wall and have spilled out into space. She is interested in notions of geographical displacement, the materiality of the image and forms of translation through materials. Her works propose reflections on shifts in distance, immediacy, and time.
